Black Hair Story

Black Hair Story

Rice was braided into the hair of African women to serve as sustenance on their way to enslavement and enslaved Africans also used cornrows to transfer and create maps to leave plantations and the homes of their captors. This act of using hair as a tool for resistance is said to have been evident across South America.

Whether it's feeling like a zoo animal that everyone wants to touch, or it's being asked to take your braids out for a job - there are some reactions to afro hair that are more - ahem - challenging than others. So, here's a workshop on the evolution of Afro-textured hair and how its impact on society through time tells a story within itself, a story that speaks volumes about the Black experience and identity. Leave with a guide on things not to say to someone with afro hair.
