International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

Have you ever thought about whether systems of slavery such as North American chattel slavery were ever truly abolished?

Have you ever had a sneaking suspicion that slavery still exists today?

Have you ever questioned what exactly slavery is?

If your answer to any of these questions is “yes,” then this event is for you.

Join us this December as we shine a light on the International Day of the Abolition of Slavery. From the Congo to the United Kingdom, the existence of modern day slavery is a rampant issue that is alive and thriving on a global scale. According to the United Nations and the International Labour Organisation, in 2021 alone, an estimated 50 million people - a majority of whom are women and children - were victims of modern day slavery. Today, that number only continues to grow as countless communities and populations remain vulnerable to the ever-evolving, hydra-headed system we call slavery.

Adopted by the United Nations and recognized on December 2nd, we observe the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery to seek methods for collectively liberating victims of modern day slavery and ending its cruel practices that harm people every day.

Join us for this Cultural Calendar Club event to discover more about the day, share space, and learn action steps in how you can be an agent of change in the true abolition of slavery.
