Too Indian to be British and too British to be Indian. This is a paradox that many of us 1st generation British Asians find ourselves in. Growing up - like many - I was bullied…called names…. made to feel different at school….Often made to feel not normal.

Yet when I visited India – I also felt like I didn’t quite belong – an NRI they call us – Non resident Indian

“Where are you from?” They would ask.
”India” I’d say.
”No where were you born?” they then ask.
”England” I would answer.

The reverse would be the case when I was asked in England.

So the question “where are you really from” can mean many different things …Born and brought up in England, I always identified as British first - before identifying with being Indian - though there’s one part of my life where this isn’t true…
